8 Ways To Prepare For Camp Bestival!

We were recently lucky enough to be invited to visit Camp Bestival which took place at Lulworth Castle, Dorset. We went for the first time two years ago as part of the Camp Bestival blogger ambassador scheme and had such an amazing time we jumped at the chance to have another crack at it. This year though? Was a totally different experience as it rained. And rained. So below are some top tips if you are thinking of going next year of great things to do...and how to cope with an unexpected downpour.

You Can Still Festival If You Don't Camp
I am not a camper but this doesn't stop me enjoying Camp Bestival. Again we stayed off site in Weymouth. This time choosing a local Premier Inn which was perfectly located by the beach. We visited for the Saturday and Sunday but still felt that we got a pretty amazing festival experience. If you want to stay on site but don't fancy the hassle of unpacking your tent? Then maybe splash out on one of the beautiful Yurts available.

Bring Your Own Everything
Camp Bestival has an amazing selection of food on offer as well as the most delicious frozen cocktails. However if you are there for the full four days it may work out as a little bit expensive. We had a picnic with us both days. You are allowed to bring in your own alcohol to the site. As long as it's not OTT or in bottles. So I combined my Daiquiris with the odd gin in a tin brought all the way from Brum.

Sit Down And Enjoy The Show
You can get a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount that is going on in Camp Bestival. You could always get a great spot by the main stage for all day entertainment or wander around stumbling on the smaller shows on offer. We had the most fun joining in with a wedding at the inflatable church. Yes an inflatable church. It kept us out of the rain and we ended up screaming with laughter whilst the bride danced to Beyoncé. Perfection!

Under My Umbrella
Our previous travels to Camp Bestival have involved glorious sunshine. Sadly our first day there was pouring. Non stop. The rain the day before had left the site extremely mud fuelled. I am SO glad that I packed our wellies as they were really needed. So I would say if you are attending next year make sure that you have wellies and waterproofs in the car. We also took a couple of brollies in with us. There were waterproofs available on site and we did have to invest in a couple to cover our picnic bag and my tiny boy. So don't panic if you get caught in a downfall.

Craft Till Your Hearts Content
Really pay attention to your map and highlight any areas that may occupy your kids for a while. My girl LOVES craft so we did a few sessions. She was SO happy. The sessions were free and again were amazing way to keep out of the rain. There was also a wonderful LEGO area which we visited a few times in between showers. Make sure you pop back at the end of the day to collect any crafts as they seemed to have vanished by day two.

Wear What You Want
Camp Bestival is the place to wear whatever the hell you want. Each year they do a theme and this year was no exception with Rock Stars and Pop Stars. But? If you want to wear a floral headband at 39? Go for it! It really is a place to embrace your inner child and go wild with your outfits.

Be Prepared
This year was different for us. Used to bright sunshine we did feel a bit unprepared. I'm so glad last minute I shoved in wellies or else I'm not quite sure what we would have done. We also ditched our faithful festival trolley as it would have got stuck in the mud. However the good things about kids is that they do not care about the rain. As long as they are having fun that's all that matters. My two had the time of their lives and didn't even notice it was tipping it down.

Go With Friends
I was lucky enough to catch up with a few friends over the weekend and it aways makes it a lot more fun. On the Saturday my friends and I stood for a few hours under a giant brolly drinking cocktails and putting the world to rights. On the Sunday? Thank goodness the sun arrived so we made base camp in the children's area and chatted in between taking kids on rides, eating pizzas and maybe have another gin or three.

I can't wait to visit Camp Bestival again next year and who knows we may even camp this time? Early bird tickets are already out now and this is a great way to get your ticket and spend the next year planning your adventures! If you want a better look at what happens at Camp Bestival check out a vlog from the day below.

  1. I think it's great you can take food and drinks in. At Cornbury you couldn't so if you're not camping and staying all day you're talking the best part of £20 for each meal you have without drinks for a family of 4. The only thing going with kids as a day goer, keeping the kids going until late is hard in the sun, let alone rain where you can't just sit down and chill out. Having friends with a tent to go back to for a rest is worth working out!
